10-03 Immigration ActOn October 3, 1965, on Liberty Island, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Immigration and Nationality Act, abolishing the McCarran-Walter Act of 1952, which had held in place a national origins quota system established 30 years earlier. This effectively replaced decades worth of federally mandated discrimination against specific nationalities attempting to seek a new life in the U.S.
