National Cheeseburger Day
While New Yorkers have strong opinions on where to get (and what makes) the city’s best bagel or loaf of rye bread, and will come to blows on the subject of pizza, that beloved American staple, the hamburger, has its own corner of culinary controversy as well. Like so many Americans, the hamburger has its roots in Germany, but topping it with cheese was a crafty American innovation. From coining the word “cheeseburger” to establishing National Cheeseburger Day, the intervening years have seen many great patty/dairy combinations in this and other cities. But if you can only pick one, it’s hard to say no to Peter Luger’s legendary serving in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge.
