The Taking of Pelham 123 (dir. Joseph Sargent, 1974)

08-30 The Taking of the Pelham 123

We’re talking about the real one, guys; not the recent winner of 2009’s “It Wasn’t Broken” Award. A simple story of a subway hijacking could, of course, take place in any Metropolis with a mass transit system (Moscow, London, Tokyo, etc.). But the dialogue here is pure Big Apple. The witty banter between the mayor and his deputy is laugh-out-loud funny and the crackling cat-and-mouse game between Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw is as deep and angular as the subway itself.
