07-30 George SteinbrennerOn July 30, 1990, having been caught working with a gambler to smear one of his own players, George Steinbrenner gave up control of the Yankees on orders from Major League Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent. While not in control, Steinbrenner maintained ownership, and was reinstated to his managerial position in 1993.

  1. The player who was the target was Hall of Famer Dave Winfield and the little sleazy “gambler” was Howard Spero. Winfield was an amazing athlete – he could have been a top draft choice by an NBA or NFL team but he chose baseball. His first team was the San Diego Padres
