Force of Evil (dir. Abraham Polonsky, 1948)

07-24 Force of Evil

This modern Cain & Abel story, starring John Garfield and Thomas Gomez, treats us to a New York City of mobsters, lawyers, and small time crooks. It is also a New York that would soon serve as a refuge for blacklisted radicals, like Polonsky and Garfield, who couldn’t get a job in Hollywood during the McCarthy era. At the same time, the visuals of the film give us a noirish city that looms and presses on the characters, culminating in a brilliant finale under the towers of the George Washington Bridge.
