Beautiful New York

A Celebration of the City

Top 50 Greatest NYC Movies — #35

Speedy (dir. Ted Wilde, 1928)

07-02 Speedy

This sparkling Harold Lloyd comedy was one of the last movies to be shot on location in New York City until The Naked City, two full decades later. As the title suggests, Speedy is about the breakneck pace at which the city moves, and treats us to the tribulations of a comic hero who goes from train, to trolley, to taxi cab, as he sojourns from Coney Island, to Washington Square, to the dearly departed old Penn Station. But the highlight of the film, both for comic madness and for Big Apple staples, is when Babe Ruth shows up in a cameo appearance as himself, and has Lloyd take him on a wild ride up to Yankee Stadium. This is New York as so many New Yorkers see it: without ever slowing down.
