It Happened Today in New York City
On June 25, 1930, the Daily News Building opened at 220 East 42nd Street, a block to the east of the neighborhood’s other art deco masterpieces, the Chrysler and the Chanin. With the lobby adorned by its famous globe, later used for the Daily Planet in Richard Donner’s Superman movies, the News Building was the crowning achievement of architect Raymond Hood, until he eclipsed it with Rockefeller Center. The newspaper, The Daily News, maintained its headquarters in this building until its move to Penn Plaza in 1995.
