The Warriors (dir. Walter Hill, 1979)
Highly stylized and truer to the spirit of the law than the letter, this film is a fantasy walpurgisnacht of a journey through the New York City subway and parks. Admittedly, street gang culture has never looked like this (gangs don’t wear baseball uniforms and paint their faces like rockers). But the feelings that these kabuki touches evoke are chillingly accurate to the bad old days of the late 70’s, when Coney Island was seedy, the subway was creepy, and the park was not the place to be at night. See this one, and you’ll never look at empty bottles the same way again.
