Top 50 Greatest NYC Movies — #43
#43 Clockers (dir. Spike Lee, 1995)
Lower income housing, commonly known simply as “the projects”, is a standing indictment on the socio-economic failures of a city more popularly seen as the home of high-rises and plazas, artists and brokers. These drug-addled fortresses of a destitute community serve as the setting for this gritty crime story about a pusher, a murder, and a false confession. Through it all, the brutal brick towers loom over their residents, visual reminders of the trapped feeling that the marginalized city-dwellers have on a daily basis. In a city that offers so much, Clockers spotlights those with no options.
