It Happened Today in New York City
On May 27, 1930, the Chrysler Building opened for business. Though considered one of the most beautiful skyscrapers in the world, today, it received mixed reactions upon opening and the architect, William Van Alen, never received another major commission. The world’s first man-made structure to exceed 1,000 feet, it was the tallest building in the world for a little less than a year, before the opening of the Empire State Building. To this day, the Chrysler Building remains the world’s tallest steel-supported brick building.
