It Happened Today in New York City
On May 14, 1940, anarchist and orator, Emma Goldman, died of a stroke at age 70. Born in present day Lithuania, Goldman immigrated to New York at age 20 (after a brief time in Rochester), where she later established the magazine, Mother Earth. At age 50, she was deported and divided her remaining years between Russia and Canada. But she would forever remain most famous for the time she spent, and the work she did, in New York.
