It Happened Today in New York City
On May 7, 1965, with an impromptu walk down Riverside Drive, New York City celebrated its first Israeli Independence Day Parade. Continually observed to this day as “Celebrate Israel”, the parade remains a festive occasion in the Western Hemisphere’s most Jewish city, where the State of Israel’s right to exist in the first place was decided by the United Nations some 17 years earlier. With that right still being questioned on both sides of the globe, the parade continues to inspire Jewish New Yorkers and Israelis alike, in their struggle to survive in the face of adversity.
