It Happened Today in New York City
On April 29, 1940, There Shall Be No Night by Robert E. Sherwood opened at the Alvin Theatre on Broadway. Starring Alfred Lunt, Lynn Fontanne, and a very young Montgomery Clift, the play is set in Finland on the eve of the Russian invasion during World War II. Serious and ripped from the headlines of the day, the play would run for 115 performances and win the Pulitzer Prize in Drama (one of three for the playwright).
