04-18 Castle GardenOn April 18, 1890, the last immigrants to come through Castle Garden were processed. This terminated the government’s contract with the former fort, which had served as an immigration processing station for nearly 35 years. For the next 19 months, immigrants were then processed through the Barge Office, until the 1892 opening of the Ellis Island Immigration Processing Station.
