Beautiful New York

A Celebration of the City

It Happened Today in New York City

04-15 Straus ParkOn April 15, 1915, at the corner of 106th Street and Broadway, Straus Park was dedicated, in honor of Isador and Ida Straus, who had died tragically on the RMS Titanic, three years earlier. The park features the beautiful bronze statue, Memory, modeled by Audrey Munson, whose likeness can be seen on many of the great public sculptures throughout the city, and who came to be known as “the American Venus”. The Bible quote, inscripted on the memorial, speaks to the Straus’ relationship: “Lovely and pleasant were they in their lives, and in their death they were not parted.”
