Moonlight Skating—Central Park, the Terrace and the Lake by John O’Brien Inman

04-06 Moonlight Skating

While others may see the constant activity and crowded energy of New York City as a sign of seedy chaos and dissonance, native New Yorker, John O’Brien Inman, recognizes it as a physical expression of joy. Using the European influences of his own painting style, and that of Bethesda Terrace and Fountain in Central Park, Inman’s staggeringly beautiful moonlit ice skating scene celebrates the city’s capacity for spontaneous sport and play. An associate of the National Academy of Design (and son of its co-founder and first vice president, Henry Inman), the artist recognizes the park in the same way its designers did — not as a “grass museum” but as a place to be actively used and enjoyed from the inside. The same could be said of this painting.
