Top 20 Greatest NYC Paintings — #9
Manhattan Rhythms by Leon Kroll
Native New Yorker, Leon Kroll, is most famous for his nudes. But he also did still life and landscape painting, and this celebration of the Naked City has at least as many stunning curves, contours, highlights and shadows, as his depictions of the human body. In the foreground, we see laborers with bent backs, overcast with the shadows of their surrounding sheds and equipment. Behind them, majestically and heroically rises the fruits of their labor — the grand, palatial towers of downtown Manhattan. Two Cass Gilbert masterpieces are uniquely distinguishable on the skyline, but all of the buildings enjoy an equal share of sunshine and sentiment.
