A Celebration of the City

Top 20 Greatest NYC Paintings — #12

New York by George Bellows

03-14 New York 1911

Many of George Bellows’ New York scenes feature park and river views, like several others on this list. And, of course, he is most famous for his atmospheric and heroic paintings of boxers in the ring, from the days when New York was the undisputed capital of the sport. But nothing can beat this 1911 depiction of Times Square, still in the first decade of its modern life of din and decadence. Here, among the workers and the players, the drivers and the passengers, the street and the sky, the steam and the snow, we are submerged in the interlocking dissonance that has remained the staple of midtown for over a century since Bellows’ time.
