New York Interpreted: The Bridge by Joseph Stella

03-13 The Bridge

Though it is now a classic symbol of the old New York aesthetic, the Brooklyn Bridge was, in its day, the modern emissary of the city’s future. How appropriate, then, that one of its greatest artistic depictions is in the Futurist style. Italian artist, Joseph Stella, loved the modernity and technology of early-to-mid 20th century New York. And the bridge was his favorite example of this. He painted it many times, virtually always from this perspective — the full-on view of the towers as they rise before you, as you walk across the bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Whether in art or in life, this walk remains one of the great only-in-New York experiences.
