Beautiful New York

A Celebration of the City

It Happened Today in New York City…

02-24 FultonOn February 24, 1815, steamship pioneer, Robert Fulton, died of tuberculosis at the age of 49. The first person to free maritime travel from the tyranny of the wind, Fulton’s steam-powered boats changed the way travel and transportation were viewed and practiced. The port city of New York recognized the innovation immediately and Fulton Street (in both Manhattan and Brooklyn), Fulton Ferry Landing, and Fulton Fish Market all serve to commemorate his vision and intrepidity. His monument at Trinity Churchyard receives visitors to this day.
