Top 20 Greatest NYC Songs — #5
New York, New York by Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green
Bernstein’s Broadway musical about three sailors with just 24 hours in New York City opened in 1944, when those sailors would still be at war. Adapted from Jerome Robbins’ ballet, Fancy Free, and back on Broadway today in a revival at the Lyric Theatre, the show’s opening number is one of the most well-known celebrations of the joy of experiencing Gotham for the first time.
