Beautiful New York

A Celebration of the City

Top 10 Greatest Historic NYC Photographs — #2

Grand Central believed to be by Hal Morey

02 Grand Central

There is great mystery surrounding this breathtaking photo of what many consider the most beautiful public interior in New York. The photographer has long been credited as “unknown” though, in recent years, there are many who claim it was Hal Morey of the New York Central Railroad (though he would not have incorrectly called the terminal “Grand Central Station” as the picture is so frequently labeled). There is also some disagreement over whether the photo was taken in 1926, 1934, or one of the other years that has been attributed. What everyone acknowledges is that the stunning view of heavenly sun rays pouring through the windows of the terminal captures the magic of New York City in all its glory.
