Beautiful New York

A Celebration of the City

On Times Square by Dennis Stock

The Broadway Theatre District attracted as many young hopefuls from around the country in 1955 as it does today. Dennis Stock’s moody, rainy picture of a young actor trudging through Times Square is an atmospheric study of the relationship between the artist and his city. The wet, dirty, neon jungle doesn’t seem to care that the performer is a young James Dean on the brink of stardom. Stock photographed Dean in many locations, including Hollywood and his hometown in Indiana. Yet, in spite of the cold hard concrete and the driving rain, Dean never appears more comfortable or at home than here in the Big Apple.
