Top 10 Greatest City-Specific Museums in NYC — #6
The New York Historical Society
At 210 years old, the New York Historical Society is the oldest cultural institution in the city. Across the street from Central Park to the east and the American Museum of Natural History to the north, NYHS houses an equaled research library that draws historical scholars from all over the world. Their cleverly and thoughtfully curated temporary exhibitions have included retrospectives on such famous image makers as Keith Haring and Bill Cunningham. But landmark studies on the city’s movers and shakers have been the museum’s benchmark. These include exhibits such as Slavery in New York, Remembering 9/11, Lincoln and New York, Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America, and French Founding Father: Lafayette’s Return to Washington’s America, just to name a few.
