The Noble Maritime Collection
New York City owes so much of its status as a commercial and economic supercity to its harbor, the largest and safest in the western world. One great artistic chronicler of New York Harbor, and of sailing life in general, was John A. Noble. The Staten Island museum dedicated to the preservation of Noble’s work is located appropriately at Sailors’ Snug Harbor. In addition to Noble’s paintings, the collection also preserves the history and culture of Snug Harbor’s days as a retirement home for aged seamen. The central exhibit is Noble’s actual houseboat, from which he frequently painted while moored just off the Staten Island coast.
