Top 10 Greatest Murals in NYC — #1

Ye Waverly Inn

1 Ye Waverly InnEdward Sorel’s universally beloved mural that graces the interior of Ye Waverly Inn captures the essence of Greenwich Village like no other work of visual art. In blazingly accurate yet highly whimsical caricature, 43 of the neighborhood’s most famous denizens – literary, political, and artistic figures, one and all – are emblazoned on the walls for everyone’s enjoyment. With clear love and admiration for the work of its many subjects, tempered with an irreverence that personifies the neighborhood and its movers and shakers, the mural lampoons Anaïs Nin, Marlon Brando, Fran Lebowitz, Jackson Pollock, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Thelonious Monk, Emma Goldman, Jack Kerouac, Joan Baez, Walt Whitman, Jane Jacobs, and Andy Warhol, just to name a very select few. For those who tire of the notion that fine art must be serious, this mural is the most welcome relief in town.

Amen to your sentiment on humor in fine art.

Nice list. I love public art. It was an interesting survey.

Thanks for all of your meaningful work.

    Keep the Faith,

  2. Gosh!! Thank you.
I also did the mural in The Monkey Bar Restaurant,
in case you haven’t been there.

    • Matthew Baker

I’ve been there, but not since 2009. So I really must go back and see your work (though I’ve seen depictions on the internet of course).

Thank you so much for commenting. It is an honor to have you hear at Beautiful NY.
