Top 10 Greatest Murals in NYC — #8
The stunning murals at Harlem Hospital are the work of four separate artists, commissioned in 1935 by the WPA. Sicilian immigrant, Alfred Crimi, was the only one who didn’t need to contend with racist scrutiny (in Harlem!) in order to get his work done. Harlem Renaissance legend, Charles Alston, 17-year old Georgette Seabrooke, and 25-year old Vertis Hayes completed the quartet. Each brought his or her own style to the project, contributing panels with titles such as Modern Medicine, Modern Surgery and Anesthesia, Pursuit of Happiness, and Recreation in Harlem. In 2005, the crumbling murals were restored and are now on permanent display in the hospital’s Mural Pavilion for all to see.
