Top 10 Greatest Murals in NYC — #9
Bronx County Courthouse
James Monroe Hewlett painted these historic depictions of Bronx history in 1932, just in time for the opening of the landmark art deco Bronx County Courthouse. Most notable is the panel featuring Jonas Bronck’s arrival in the borough that now bears his name, but the murals also depict scenes from the American Revolution and the judgeship of John Pell, whose status as a pillar of local jurisprudence may make him a particularly worthy subject for artwork in such a building. After a construction accident damaged the already crumbling mural, the city government agreed to fund a restoration in early 2014.
