Top 10 Greatest Bridges in NYC — #1

Brooklyn Bridge

05-31 Brooklyn BridgeThe incredible 1869-1883 achievement of the intrepid German family of Roebling – and the hundreds of Irish “sandhogs” who labored under their direction – is now the stuff of legend. The grand cathedral-style aches, graceful sweep, and intricate network of cables, have inspired writers from José Martí to Hart Crane, and painters from Joseph Stella to Andy Warhol. There is little left to be said of the masterpiece that is the Brooklyn Bridge that has not already been said, so we leave the last word to a famous quote from architectural critic, Montgomery Schuyler: “It so happens that the work which is likely to be our most durable monument, and convey some knowledge of us to the most remote posterity, is a work of bare utility; not a shrine, not a palace, not a fortress, but a bridge.”
