Opened in 1909, the Manhattan Bridge is the youngest of the three bridges that connect Manhattan to Brooklyn. Reversing the stone-to-steel ratios of the Brooklyn Bridge, its distinctive blue color and glorious arched gateway by Carrère & Hastings set it apart from its neighbors. Sadly, it seems that this beautiful bridge’s biggest claim to fame is serving as the origin for the city’s silliest name for a neighborhood: DUMBO.
